Below are the steps to follow in creating of the straight knit skirt.
1. Sketching
Sketching a desired knit skirt can give a person an idea of how the final
product will look like and what tools will be necessary to fulfill one’s
design, including thread texture, amount, and color, and the approximate
number of knitting needles. One does not require to possess excellent drawing
skills to sketch a straight knit skirt. A long tall rectangular box can
be drawn with a slight narrowing on the top (that is a place of a waist
on the skirt). The longer the skirt the greater amount of thread (and needles!)
might be needed to complete the design. In addition, the warmer the skirt,
the thicker the thread and needles will be utilized to create that skirt.
A desired color and texture can be added to the sketch that both reflect
the original idea. When, according to the sketch, both thread and tools
are prepared for the beginning of the project, the next step is to take
body measurements.
2. Body measurements. To create a good skirt one should have some measurements.
For the straight knit skirt it is necessary to take the following
body measurements – waist and hips circumference and skirt’s
length. A waist level is located approximately an inch and a half up
from one’s belly. Hips level, on the other hand, are situated
about two inches down from one’s belly and need to be measured
at the widest point on the body. To measure the skirt’s length,
start at the waist level and measure down to the desired length. For
example, waist is 27 inches, hips are 36 inches, and the length of
the skirt is 15 inches. To keep the straight knit skirt “straight”,
one needs to produce 36 inches of knitting consistently throughout
the design and gradually reduce that amount to 27 inches at the waist
level.
3. Start knitting!
Knitting the skirt is the most exciting part of the process. It is here
where a person shows its creativity and passion. On the other hand,
knitting is also the most challenging of the steps and requires careful
observation and patience. In the beginning, depending on the taken
measurements, one needs to decide on the amount of loops for the skirt.
The amount of loops created has to match the width of the skirt. For
example, for 36 inches of hips measurement a person has to create at
least 360 loops to start. Check out the needles again!
As it was mentioned in the beginning of the text, one must decide on
the amount of needles he or she wants to utilize in the design process.
In the situation with the straight knit skirt, one can use either three
or five needles as desired. With three needles the skirt would have to
be sewn together at the end and will have a seam. With five needles,
on the other hand, the skirt will not have a seam due to knitting in
circles.
It is important to try the skirt on before finishing it fully to make
sure that it matches the person’s body, which leads to the next
to last step of the process – alteration.
4. Alteration
Trying the skirt on before completing it entirely is a crucial step
in achieving the best fit. Very often the substance of the thread
and
or the style of knitting change the proportions of the original design.
For example, certain types of thread do not stretch very well or shrink
when washed which diminishes the proportions of the skirt. In addition,
people vary in their knitting styles – some knit very tight and
some knit very loose, which also can change the proportions of the
skirt. Therefore, if the skirt is too tight, more loops need to be
created to make it wider. On the contrary, if the skirt turned out
to be too loose, reduce the amount of loops for the best fit. So trying
the skirt before completing it is a great tip to remember!
5. Handing
The final and not less vital step of the knitting experience is the
handing of the final product. Here, the substance and color of
the thread are
important to understand. For washing instructions, these simple rules
should be followed – for natural fibers such as cotton and wool,
use warm or cold water to prevent the shrinkage of the skirt. For artificial
fibers such as polyester, rayon, and other of such kind, the usage
of hot, warm, or cold water is permitted, depending on the color of
the garment. Generally, colored knit products are not washed in hot
water, especially if they are produced with the thread of the natural
origin. One can visit Kohls

information about fibers which are suitable for skirts.
Warm or cool temperatures are recommended for drying all knitted products.
As far as I am concerned, I like to choose everything for knitting with
my beloved husband. He seems to be an excellent expert in such adventures
and has some kind of creativity and desire to help me.
